Coming from our beloved Yorkshire, then it is good to be able to report on a Yorkshire story. Of course, Bradford is one of our great Northern cities. Consequently we have our own share of stories relating to disabilities. Including this story about Alana Walker.
Alana said “I’ve always loved taking part in sport despite my condition, even competing in the UK School Athletics Games, and discovered cycling whilst at university. With the handcycle that was available as part of their bike fleet I really had a new lease of life as I could take part at an equivalent level to my friends that regularly cycle.”
Alana had a tough journey to fund the equipment she needed.
So, she applied to the national charity,”Children Today”. Consequently this charity help supply special funding for equipment for children and young people with disabilities under the age of 25 across the UK.
As a bit of a background, Children Today (Registered Charity No. 1137436) was formed in 1994. Providing unfortunate children and young people with disabilities. Ages that could apply went up the 25 year olds. Off course supplying specialist equipment to help the children and young adults enjoy a better quality of life. At the same time giving them and greater independence. Consequently, the charity relies totally on voluntary donations.
In this case then “Children Today” provides grants to buy specialised equipment. Including, individually and specifically adapted battery driven electric wheelchairs, and many other disability aids.
Alana was able to secure funding for her specialised wheelchair and could complete her ambition to take up the Germany ride.
Of course, a great story about a local Yorkshire girl from Bradford. For this reason, Alana Walker, a partially paralysed 24-year-old, is set to take on handcycle challenge from UK to Germany
